Precautions

Because electric vehicles contain high voltage batteries, improper handling of the high voltage system or the vehicle may result in serious accidents, including electric shock and current leakage.
  • All high voltage wiring and connectors are orange.
  • A high voltage warning label is attached to high voltage components.
  • High voltage components: high voltage battery, power relay assembly (PRA), quick charge relay assembly (QRA), motor, power cable, BMS ECU, inverter, LDC, on-board charger (OBC), main relay, precharge relay, precharge resistor, battery current sensor, service plug, main fuse, battery temperature sensor, busbar, charging port, air conditioner compressor, electric power control unit (EPCU), high voltage heater, high voltage heater relay, etc.
  • Indicate the possible high voltage hazard by attaching the "Caution High Voltage" label to the vehicle, as shown in the illustration below.

Personal Protective Equipment

Name Illustration Description
Insulated Gloves
Used when inspecting or working on high voltage components
[Insulation performance: 1000 V / 300 A or higher]
Insulated Shoes
Used when inspecting or working on high voltage components
Insulated Clothing
Insulated Helmet
Safety Glasses
Used in the following cases:
• Sparks may occur during removal, installation, or inspection of high voltage battery terminals or wiring.
• When working on the high voltage battery pack.
Face Shield
Insulated Mat
Place all removed high voltage components on an insulated mat to prevent accidents.
Insulating Sheet
Insulation sheet is used to cover high voltage components to protect people who do not wear personal protective equipment from accidents.
Warning Tape
Used to warn of the danger of crossing this line.

Inspection of Personal Protective Equipment

  • Make sure personal protective equipment is not damaged.
  • Make sure insulated gloves are not torn or damaged.
  • Put on insulated gloves after removing moisture.

Fold the insulated glove as shown above.Fold it 3 to 4 more times to make it airtight.Squeeze the inflated glove to check whether it is torn or damaged.

Precautions for Power Cable Repair

  • When installing a high voltage terminal, insulate the terminal with insulation tape.
  • Tighten the high voltage bolt to the specified torque.
  • Be careful that the (+) terminal does not contact the (-) terminal.

Precautions for Handling the High Voltage Battery

  • For the battery management system, refer to the "High Voltage Battery Handling Manual".

Precautions in Case of Fire in the High Voltage Battery System

  • Turn off the start button. Then keep the electronic key at least 2 m away from the vehicle to prevent the engine from starting unintentionally.
  • If the fire is in its early stage, quickly DISCONNECT the service plug (refer to "High Voltage Disconnection Procedure").
  • If a fire breaks out indoors, ventilate the area to remove hydrogen gas.
  • If the fire can be extinguished, use a CO2 fire extinguisher. If it is not available, use water or other types of fire extinguisher.
  • CO2 has high insulating properties against electricity, so it is suitable for electrical fires (Class C rating).
  • If the fire cannot be extinguished, evacuate to a safe place, notify the fire department, and do not approach the vehicle until the fire is extinguished.
  • Turn off the vehicle key in case of flooding or collision, and then leave the vehicle as soon as possible.

Precautions in the Event of High Voltage Battery Gas Leakage and/or Electrolyte Leakage
  • Turn off the start button. Then keep the electronic key at least 2 m away from the vehicle to prevent the engine from starting unintentionally.
  • If the fire is in its early stage, quickly DISCONNECT the service plug (refer to "High Voltage Disconnection Procedure").
  • The gas is hydrogen and alkaline vapor. If a fire occurs indoors, ventilate the area immediately and evacuate to a safe place.
  • If leaked fluid contacts the skin, neutralize the area immediately with boric acid, then rinse with running water or saline solution.
  • If leaked vapor or fluid gets into the eyes, rinse them immediately with running water, then seek medical attention.
  • In case of gas leakage due to high temperature, do NOT use the battery until the high voltage battery has cooled to room temperature.

Precautions for Handling a Vehicle After an Accident

  • Be sure to wear insulated gloves (or rubber gloves), protective goggles, insulated clothing, and insulated boots.
  • Do NOT touch an exposed cable if its insulation coating has been removed (refer to "Precautions for Handling the Power Cable").
  • In case of a vehicle fire, if the fire can be put out, use a CO2 fire extinguisher. If it is not available, use water or other types of fire extinguishers.
  • If more than half of the vehicle is submerged in water, do not attempt to approach high voltage components such as the service plug. If such a component must be handled, first move the vehicle to a safe place, then handle the component.
  • If a fire breaks out indoors, ventilate the area immediately and evacuate to a safe place, because the gas is hydrogen and alkaline smoke.
  • If leaked fluid contacts the skin, neutralize the area immediately with boric acid, then rinse with running water or saline solution.
  • If high voltage must be disconnected, refer to the "High Voltage Disconnection Procedure" when handling the relevant components.

Preparation for Servicing an Accident Vehicle

  • Insulated gloves (or rubber gloves), protective goggles, insulated clothing, and insulated boots.
  • Boric acid powder or solution.
  • CO2 fire extinguisher or another suitable fire extinguisher.
  • Towel for wiping up electrolyte.
  • Vinyl tape (for insulating terminals)
  • Megohmmeter (for checking high-voltage insulation resistance)

Precautions When Leaving the Electric Vehicle Unattended for an Extended Period

  • Turn the START button OFF. Then keep the Smart Key 2 m (6.6 ft) or more away from the vehicle to prevent the engine from starting unintentionally. (This is to prevent the high-voltage battery from discharging quickly in the dark.)
  • If the high-voltage battery State of Charge (SOC) is below 30%, do not leave the vehicle unattended for an extended period.
  • If the vehicle is left unattended for an extended period, fully recharge the battery using normal charging every 3 months to prevent the high-voltage battery SOC from reaching 0.
  • When checking the auxiliary battery for discharge or replacing the auxiliary battery, check for a problem related to a high battery SOC voltage drop.

Hybrid Vehicle Refrigerant Recovery / Charging Precautions

  • Since the electric compressor uses high voltage, use POE oil with a high volume resistivity.
  • Do not use the same A/C recovery/charging station as for conventional belt-driven compressors.
