What to Do in an Emergency

Tire Replacement with TPMS

~3min read

If a tire becomes flat, the low tire pressure warning light will illuminate. Have the flat tire repaired by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible, or replace the flat tire with the spare tire.

WARNING! Tire Sealant Agents

Never use a tire puncture repair sealant not approved by Kia to repair and/or inflate a low-pressure tire. A sealant not approved by Kia may damage the tire pressure sensor.

Each wheel is equipped with a tire pressure sensor installed inside the tire behind the valve stem. You must use TPMS-specific wheels. It is recommended that tire repairs always be performed by an authorized Kia dealer.

Even if you replace the low-pressure tire with the spare tire, the low tire pressure warning light will remain illuminated until the low-pressure tire has been repaired and installed on the vehicle.

After you replace the low-pressure tire with the spare tire, the TPMS malfunction indicator may illuminate after a few minutes because the TPMS sensor installed on the spare wheel is not initialized.

Once the low-pressure tire has been re-inflated to the recommended pressure and the TPMS sensor installed on the vehicle, or the TPMS sensor installed on the replacement spare wheel, is initialized by an authorized Kia dealer, the TPMS malfunction indicator and the low tire pressure warning light will turn off after a few minutes of driving.

If the indicator does not turn off after a few minutes of driving, visit an authorized Kia dealer. When replacing the original mounted tire with the spare tire, the TPMS sensor on the replacement spare wheel must be initialized, and the TPMS sensor on the originally installed wheel must be deactivated. If the TPMS sensor on the originally installed wheel stored in the spare wheel holder is still activated, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System may not operate properly. Have the TPMS tire serviced or replaced by an authorized Kia dealer.

You may not be able to detect a low tire by simply looking at it. Always use a good quality tire pressure gauge to measure tire pressure. Please note that a tire that is hot (from driving) will have a higher pressure reading than a cold tire (after the vehicle has been parked for at least 3 hours and driven less than 1.6 km (1 mile) during that 3-hour period).

Allow the tires to cool before measuring tire pressure. Always make sure the tires are cold before inflating them to the recommended pressure.

A cold tire means the vehicle has been parked for 3 hours and driven less than 1.6 km (1 mile) during that 3-hour period.

Never use tire sealant if your vehicle is equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Liquid sealant not approved by Kia may damage the tire pressure sensors.

  • The TPMS cannot warn you of severe and sudden tire damage caused by external factors such as nails or road debris.
  • If you feel the vehicle becoming unstable, immediately release the accelerator pedal, apply the brake gradually with light pressure, and slowly move the vehicle to a safe place off the road.

✽ NOTICE - TPMS Protection

Interference, modification, or disabling of the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) may interfere with the system's ability to warn the driver of low tire pressure conditions and/or TPMS malfunctions. Tampering, modifying, or disabling TPMS components may void the warranty on this part of the vehicle.
