Key Teaching Procedure
Key teaching must be performed after replacing a faulty PCM (ECM) or when providing additional keys to the vehicle owner. The procedure starts with the scan tool requesting the vehicle-specific data (PIN code: 6 digits) from the PCM (ECM). A "new" PCM (ECM) can be started with vehicle-specific data and key teaching. A "learned" PCM (ECM) compares the vehicle-specific data from the scan tool with the stored data. If the data is correct, teaching can continue. If incorrect vehicle data is sent to the PCM (ECM) three times, the PCM (ECM) rejects the key teaching request for one hour. This time cannot be reduced by disconnecting the battery or other manipulations. After the battery is reconnected, the timer starts again for one hour.
Key teaching is performed by turning the ignition ON with the key and an additional scan tool command. The PCM (ECM) stores the relevant data in the EEPROM and in the transponder. Then the PCM (ECM) performs the required authentication to confirm the teaching process. Successful programming is then confirmed by a message to the scan tool. If the key is already known to the PCM (ECM) from previous teaching, the authentication is accepted and the EEPROM data is updated. The transponder contents are not changed (this is not possible for a taught transponder). An attempt to re-teach a key that was already taught during the same teaching cycle is recognized by the PCM (ECM). The PCM (ECM) rejects this key and a message is sent to the scan tool. The PCM (ECM) rejects invalid keys presented for teaching, and a message is sent to the scan tool. A key may be invalid due to errors in the transponder or other causes resulting from failed data programming. If the PCM (ECM) detects different transponder authenticators, the PCM (ECM) key is considered invalid.
Maximum number of keys that can be taught: 8.
If an error occurs during the immobilizer service menu, the PCM (ECM) status remains unchanged and the specified diagnostic trouble code is stored. If the PCM (ECM) status and the key status do not match for key teaching, the scan tool procedure is stopped and the specified diagnostic trouble code is stored in the PCM (ECM).
PCM (ECM) Learning Status
PCM (ECM) Virgin Status
After replacing a new PCM (ECM), the GDS shows that the PCM (ECM) is in virgin status in Key Teaching mode. The "VIRGIN" status means that the PCM (ECM) does not match any previously stored PIN code.
User Password Learning Procedure The user password for Limp Home is learned at a service center (dealer). The vehicle owner can select a four-digit number. The user password is accepted for learning only by a "learned" PCM (ECM). Before the user password is entered into the PCM (ECM) for the first time, the status is "virgin". The Limp Home function is not possible. Learning is started by turning the ignition ON with a valid key (learned key) and sending the user password with the tester. After successful learning, the user password status changes from "virgin" to "learned". A learned user password can also be changed. This is possible if the user password status is "learned" and the tester sends access authorization, either the old user password or vehicle data. After correct authorization, the PCM (ECM) requests a new user password. The status remains "learned" and the new user password will be valid for the next Limp Home mode. If incorrect user passwords or incorrect vehicle data have been sent to the PCM (ECM) three times in succession or intermittently, the PCM (ECM) will reject password change requests for one hour. This time cannot be reduced by disconnecting the battery or any other action. After the battery is reconnected, the timer starts again for one hour.
User Password Learning※ If an incorrect password is entered, repeat the procedure from the first step after 10 seconds.

Limp Home Function
Limp Home from Tester If the PCM (ECM) detects a SMARTRA or transponder malfunction, the PCM (ECM) will allow the immobilizer emergency function to be performed. Limp Home is possible only if the user password (4 digits) has been provided to the PCM (ECM) beforehand. This password can be selected by the vehicle owner and is programmed at a service center. The user password can be sent to the PCM (ECM) through the special tester menu. Only if the PCM (ECM) is in the "learned" state, the user password status is "learned", and the user password is correct, will the PCM (ECM) be unlocked for a limited time (30 sec.). The engine can only be started during this time. After this time has elapsed, engine start is not possible. If an incorrect user password is sent, the PCM (ECM) will reject the request for Limp Home for one hour. Disconnecting the battery or any other action cannot shorten this time. After the battery is reconnected to the PCM (ECM), the timer starts again for one hour.
Limp Home from Ignition Key Limp Home can also be activated using the ignition key. The user password can be entered into the PCM (ECM) by a special ignition ON/OFF sequence. Only if the PCM (ECM) is in the "learned" state, the user password status is "learned", and the user password is correct, will the PCM (ECM) be unlocked for a limited time (30 sec.). During this time the engine can be started. After this time has elapsed, engine start is not possible. After entering a new password, the timer (30 sec.) starts again. After the ignition is turned OFF, the PCM (ECM) is locked if the timer has expired for 8 seconds. For the next start, the user password must be entered again.

ECM and Smartra Replacement: If the ECM is faulty, replace the unit with a "clean" or "neutral" ECM. All keys must be learned by the new ECM. Keys that are not learned by the ECM are invalid for the new ECM (see key learning procedure). Vehicle-specific data must be left unchanged due to the unique transponder programming. If the Smartra is faulty, the Smartra must be learned. The new Smartra device replaces the old one and the Smartra must be learned.
Precautions Before Replacing the PCM (ECM)
Precautions before replacement (keys and additional registration)
Neutralization
The PCM (ECM) can be set to the "neutral" state using the scan tool. Insert a valid ignition key and turn the ignition ON. The PCM (ECM) then requests vehicle data from the scan tool. Refer to "Neutral Mode" for message communication. After the vehicle data is received successfully, the PCM (ECM) is neutralized. The ECM remains locked. Neither the emergency home mode nor the "double ignition ON" function is accepted by the PCM (ECM). Key learning is performed according to the procedure described for a new PCM (ECM). Vehicle-specific data must remain unchanged because of the unique transponder programming. If the data must be changed, request new keys with virgin transponders. This function is intended to neutralize the PCM (ECM) and the key. Example: if a key is lost, neutralize the PCM (ECM), then learn the keys. (Refer to "What to Do If the Key and PIN Code" for details.)
If incorrect vehicle data is sent to SMARTRA three times in a row or intermittently, SMARTRA rejects the neutral mode request for one hour. Disconnecting the battery or other manipulations cannot reduce this time. After the battery is reconnected, the timer starts again for one hour.
Neutralization
The SMARTRA EMS can be set to the neutral state using the scan tool. Insert the ignition key (regardless of key condition) and turn the ignition ON. When the correct vehicle password is received from the GST, the SMARTRA can be neutralized. Neutralization of the SMARTRA is possible only if the DPN matches the value entered in the GST. If the SMARTRA status is neutral, the EMS maintains the locked state, and starting by "double ignition" is not possible. If the vehicle password is changed, only a new virgin transponder must be used. For the first key, after learning the vehicle key, it can be used. If incorrect vehicle data is sent to SMARTRA three times in a row or intermittently, SMARTRA rejects the neutral mode request for one hour. Disconnecting the battery or other manipulations cannot reduce this time. After the battery is reconnected, the timer starts again for one hour.
