Description and Operation
Description
The emission control system consists of three main systems.
The crankcase emission control system prevents crankcase gases from being released into the atmosphere. This system recirculates the gas back to the intake manifold (closed-type crankcase ventilation).
The evaporative emission control system prevents fuel vapor from being released into the atmosphere. This system stores the vapor in the canister and burns it when the engine is in the appropriate operating condition.
The exhaust emission control system converts the three pollutants [hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx)] into harmless substances using the three-way catalytic converter.
Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Suspect area |
| Engine Does Not Start or Is Difficult to Start | Vapor hose damaged or disconnected |
| Engine Hard to Start | Purge control solenoid valve malfunction |
| Rough idle or engine stalls | Vapor hose damaged or disconnected |
| PCV valve malfunction | |
| Rough idle | Evaporative emission control system malfunction |
| Excessive Oil Consumption | PCV hose clogged |
