Deformed strut Replace
Damaged Gear Bearing Replace
Kinked or Damaged Hoses Reposition or Replace
Damaged Oil Pressure Control Valve Replace
Damaged Oil Pump Input Shaft Bearing Replace
Noise Whine noise from the steering gear
All power steering system components may produce a whining noise. One of the most common whine noises occurs when the steering wheel is turned while the vehicle is not moving. This noise will be most noticeable when turning the steering wheel with the brakes applied. There is no relation between this noise and steering performance. Do not replace the valve if no whine noise is heard. The noise becomes extreme. A replaced valve will also produce a slight noise. Replacement is not always the solution for this condition.
Knocking or clunking in rack and pinion Hose contact with vehicle body Move
Loose transaxle bracket Tighten
Loose tie rod end and/or ball joint Tighten
Worn tie rod end and/or ball joint Replace
Noise from oil pump Low Fluid Level Refill

Loose pump mounting bolts Tighten

Repair Procedures

Service Adjustment Procedure

Steering Wheel Play Inspection

  1. Turn the steering wheel so the front wheels face straight ahead.

  2. Mark the center of the steering wheel.

  3. Measure the distance the steering wheel can be turned without moving the front wheels.

Standard value: 0–30 mm (0–1.1811 in.) or less

  4. If the play exceeds the specified value, inspect the steering column, shaft, and linkage.

Stationary Steering Effort Inspection

  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.

  2. Attach a spring scale to the steering wheel. With the engine idling, pull the scale and read it as soon as the tires begin to rotate.

    Standard value: 29.4 N (3.0 kgf, 6.6 lbf) MAX.

  3. If the measured value exceeds the standard value, inspect the steering gear box.
