Driving Your Vehicle

Before Driving

~3min read

Before Entering the Vehicle

  • Make sure all windows, outside mirrors and exterior lights are clean.
  • Check the condition of the tires.
  • Check under the vehicle for any signs of leaks.
  • Make sure there are no obstacles behind you if you are going to back up.

Required Checks

Fluid levels, such as engine oil, engine coolant, brake fluid and washer fluid, should be checked regularly at intervals specific to each fluid. Refer to "Maintenance" on page 8-09 for more details.

WARNING

Driving while distracted can result in loss of vehicle control, leading to an accident, severe personal injury and death. The primary driver is responsible for the safe and legal operation of the vehicle. Portable devices, other equipment or vehicle systems that take the driver's eyes, attention and focus away from the safe operation of the vehicle, or that are prohibited by law, must never be used while operating the vehicle.

Before Starting

  • Close and lock all doors.
  • Adjust the seat so that all controls are easily reachable.
  • Adjust the interior and outside rear view mirrors.
  • Make sure all lights work.
  • Check all gauges.
  • Turn the ignition key to the ON position and check the operation of the warning lights.
  • Release the parking brake and make sure the brake warning light turns off.

For safe operation, make sure you are familiar with your vehicle and its equipment.

WARNING

All passengers must be properly restrained whenever the vehicle is moving. Refer to "Seat Belts" on page 3-14 for more information on their proper use.

WARNING

Always check the area around your vehicle for people, especially children, before shifting into D (Drive) or R (Reverse).

WARNING

Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs

Driving under the influence of alcohol is dangerous. Driving under the influence is the number one cause of highway fatalities each year. Even a small amount of alcohol will affect your reflexes, perception and judgment. Driving under the influence of drugs is as dangerous as, or more dangerous than, driving under the influence of alcohol.

You are much more likely to be involved in a serious accident if you drink or use drugs and drive.

If you have been drinking or using drugs, do not drive. Do not ride with a driver who has been drinking or using drugs. Choose a designated driver or call a taxi.

WARNING

  • When you are going to park or stop the vehicle with the engine running, do not press the accelerator pedal for a long time. This may cause the engine or exhaust system to overheat and lead to a fire.
  • When you brake suddenly or turn the steering wheel quickly, unsecured items may fall to the floor and may interfere with pedal operation, possibly causing an accident. Keep all items in the vehicle securely stored.
  • If you do not concentrate on driving, an accident may result. Be careful when operating devices that may interfere with driving, such as the audio system or heater. It is the driver's responsibility to always drive safely.
