What to Do in an Emergency

Emergency Equipment

Some emergency items are carried in the vehicle to help you respond to an emergency.

Fire Extinguisher

If there is a small fire and you know how to use a fire extinguisher, carefully follow the steps.

1. Pull the pin at the top of the fire extinguisher, which holds the handle to prevent accidental discharge.

2. Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.

3. Stand approximately 2.5 m (8 ft) away from the fire and squeeze the handle to discharge the fire extinguisher. If you release the handle, the discharge will stop.

4. Sweep the nozzle back and forth across the base of the fire. After the fire appears to be out, watch carefully as it may reignite.

First Aid Kit

The first aid kit contains certain items, such as scissors, bandages, adhesive tape, etc., for treating an injured person.

Warning Triangle

Place the warning triangle on the road to warn approaching vehicles during an emergency, for example when the vehicle is parked on the shoulder due to any problem.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) (if equipped)

Tires normally lose air over time. You may need to add a few psi periodically. This is usually not a sign of a tire leak, but of normal loss. Always check tire pressure when the tires are cold, because tire pressure increases with temperature.

To check the tire pressure, perform the following steps. Steps:

1. Unscrew the valve cap, which is located on the edge of the tire.

2. Press the tire pressure gauge firmly onto the tire valve and hold it. Some air will escape when you start, and more will escape if you do not press the gauge firmly.

3. A firm, non-leaking push activates the gauge.

4. Read the tire pressure on the gauge to determine whether the tire pressure is low or high.

5. Adjust the tire pressure to the specified pressure. Refer to "Tires and Wheels" on page 9-06.

6. Reinstall the valve cap.
