Emergency Starting

Connect the cables in numerical order and disconnect them in reverse order.
Quick Start
Jump starting can be dangerous if it is performed incorrectly. To avoid injury to yourself or damage to your vehicle or battery, follow the jump starting procedure carefully. If you are unsure, we strongly recommend that you have a qualified technician or towing service assist your vehicle.
CAUTION
Use only a 12-volt system for jump starting. You may damage the 12-volt starter motor, ignition system, and other electrical components, which cannot be repaired, by using a 24-volt power source (either two 12-volt batteries connected in series or a 24-volt motor-generator set).
WARNING
Battery
Never attempt to check the battery charge level by testing the electrolyte, as this may cause the battery to crack or explode, resulting in serious injury.
WARNING
Battery
- Keep all flames and sparks away from the battery. The battery produces hydrogen gas, which can explode on contact with a flame or spark. If these instructions are not followed exactly, serious personal injury and vehicle damage may occur! If you are not sure how to follow this procedure, seek qualified assistance. Vehicle batteries contain sulfuric acid. It is poisonous and very corrosive. When jump starting, wear protective eyewear and take care not to get acid on yourself, your clothing, or the vehicle.
- Do not attempt to start the vehicle if the discharged battery is frozen or if the electrolyte level is low; the battery may rupture or explode.
- Do not allow the jumper cables (+) and (-) to touch each other. This may cause sparks.
- The battery may crack or explode when you jump start a low or frozen battery.
Jump Starting Procedure
1. Make sure the booster battery is 12 volts and that its negative terminal is grounded.
2. If the booster battery is in another vehicle, do not allow the vehicles to contact each other.
3. Turn off all unnecessary electrical loads.
4. Connect the jumper cables in the exact sequence shown in the illustration. First, connect one end of the jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the discharged battery (1), then connect the other end to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery (2).
Next, connect one end of the other jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery (3), then connect the other end to a solid, stationary metal point (such as the engine lifting bracket) away from the battery (4). Do not connect to or near any moving parts when starting the engine. Do not allow the jumper cables to contact anything other than the correct battery terminal or the correct ground. Do not lean over the battery when making connections.
CAUTION
Battery Cables
Do not connect the jumper cable from the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery to the negative (-) terminal of the discharged battery. This may cause the discharged battery to overheat and crack, releasing battery acid.
Be sure to connect one end of the jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery and the other end to a metal point far away from the battery.
5. Start the engine of the vehicle with the booster battery and let it run at 2000 rpm, then start the engine of the vehicle with the discharged battery.
If the cause of battery discharge is not obvious, have the system inspected at a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorized Kia Dealer/Service Partner.
Push Start
Your vehicle with a manual transmission should not be started by pushing, because this may damage the emission control system.
Vehicles with an automatic transmission cannot be started by pushing the start button. Follow the instructions in this section for "Jump Starting" on page 7-06.
WARNING
Never tow the vehicle to start the engine, because a sudden forward jerk when the engine starts may cause a collision with the tow vehicle.
