Engine overheating

~2min read

If the coolant temperature gauge indicates overheating, if you notice a loss of power, or if you hear a noise such as a loud knock or pinging, the engine is probably overheating. In this case:

1. Pull over to the side of the road and stop as soon as it is safe to do so.

2. Move the gear selector to P (automatic transmission) and apply the parking brake. Switch off the air conditioner if it is on.

3. If engine coolant leaks from under the engine or steam comes from under the bonnet, stop the engine. Do not open the bonnet until the coolant leak or steam has stopped.

If no coolant or steam leaks are detected, leave the engine running and check that the engine cooling fan operates. If the fan does not operate, switch off the engine.

4. Check the water pump drive belt. If it is present, check its tension. If the belt is in good condition, check for coolant leaks from the radiator, hoses or underneath the vehicle. (If the air conditioning was on, discharge of cold water when the vehicle stops is normal.)

CAUTION With the engine running, keep hair, hands, and clothing away from moving parts such as the fan and drive belts to avoid possible injury.

5. If the water pump drive belt breaks or coolant is lost, stop the engine immediately and contact the nearest authorised Kia dealer.

CAUTION Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot.

This may cause coolant to be expelled violently from the opening, with the risk of burns.

6. If the cause of overheating cannot be found, wait until the engine temperature returns to normal. Then, if coolant has been lost, add coolant until the level in the reservoir reaches the middle mark.

7. Proceed with caution, watching for any further signs of overheating. If overheating occurs again, contact an authorised Kia dealer.

WARNING

  • A significant coolant shortage indicates a leak in the cooling system; in this case, it is recommended that the system be checked by an authorised Kia dealer.
  • When the engine overheats due to a low coolant level, adding coolant immediately may cause cracks in the engine. To avoid damage, add engine coolant slowly and in small quantities.
