Vehicle Maintenance and Care. Vehicle Maintenance
The chapter on the emergency starting system of the fourth-generation Lexus GS explains how to start the engine when the smart access and start system is not working. Step-by-step instructions and clear illustrations help you carry out the procedure safely. Important notes on the causes of starting problems, on caring for the electronic key battery and on avoiding malfunctions make this section a valuable guide for emergencies.
Vehicle Maintenance Requirements
To ensure safe and economical driving, daily care and regular maintenance are essential. Lexus recommends the following maintenance work:
Scheduled Maintenance
Scheduled maintenance should be performed at the intervals specified in the maintenance schedule.
For details on maintenance work and intervals, refer to the Lexus Maintenance Booklet or the Lexus Warranty Booklet.
Do-It-Yourself Maintenance
Can you perform maintenance yourself? With a little technical skill and a few simple automotive tools, you can carry out many maintenance tasks yourself.
Please note, however, that some maintenance work requires special tools and expertise. This should be carried out by qualified mechanics. Even if you are an experienced home mechanic, we recommend having repair and maintenance work performed only by a Lexus dealer or authorized service center, or another qualified and properly equipped specialist workshop. Every Lexus dealer and authorized service center issues a maintenance record in case warranty services are required. If you have your vehicle serviced at a qualified and properly equipped specialist workshop other than a Lexus authorized service center, we recommend having a maintenance record prepared.
■Where Can I Have My Vehicle Serviced?
To keep your vehicle in the best possible condition, Lexus recommends having all maintenance work, as well as other inspections and repairs, performed by a Lexus dealer or authorized service center, or another qualified and properly equipped specialist workshop. For repairs and services covered by your warranty, please contact a Lexus dealer or authorized service center, where genuine Lexus parts are used for the repair of any problems that occur. Even for repairs or maintenance work not covered by warranty, using a Lexus dealer or authorized service center can be advantageous, as members of the Lexus dealer network can expertly assist you with any difficulties that may arise.
Thanks to their experience with Lexus vehicles, your Lexus dealer, authorized service center or other qualified and properly equipped specialist workshops will reliably and cost-effectively carry out all scheduled maintenance work on your vehicle.
■ Does Your Vehicle Need Repair?
Pay close attention to changes in performance and noise, as well as visible signs that indicate maintenance is required. Some important signs include:
- Engine misfires, stumbles or knocks
- Noticeable loss of power
- Unusual engine noises
- A leak under the vehicle (however, dripping water after using the air conditioning is normal)
- Change in exhaust noise (may indicate leakage of dangerous carbon monoxide.
Drive with the windows open and have the exhaust system inspected immediately.)
- Tires that appear to be losing air, excessive tire squealing when cornering, uneven tread wear
- Vehicle pulls to one side when driving straight on a level road
- Unusual noises when the suspension moves
- Reduced braking effectiveness, spongy brake pedal feel, pedal can be pressed almost to the floor, vehicle pulls to one side when braking
- Engine coolant temperature constantly too high
If you notice any of these signs, have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible by a Lexus dealer, authorized service center, or another qualified repair shop with the appropriate equipment. Your vehicle may need to be adjusted or repaired.
WARNING
■If your vehicle is not properly maintained
Improper maintenance can cause severe damage to the vehicle and may result in fatal or serious injury.
■ Handling the battery
Battery terminals, connectors, and battery accessories contain lead and lead compounds, which are known to cause brain damage.
Wash your hands after touching the battery.
