Coolant. Windshield washer system

~3min read

The coolant and windshield washer system of the Mercedes E-Class (4th gen., W212, 2009–2016) protects the engine and visibility in all weather conditions. This section describes mixing ratios and safety aspects that must be observed during maintenance and topping up.

Coolant

Important Safety Notes

WARNING

If antifreeze gets onto hot components in the engine compartment, it can ignite. There is a risk of fire and injury!

Let the engine cool down before topping up antifreeze. Make sure no antifreeze gets next to the filler opening. Thoroughly clean any components contaminated with antifreeze before starting the engine.

NOTE

Only fill with premixed coolant with the desired antifreeze protection. Otherwise, you may damage the engine.

For further information on coolant, refer to the Mercedes-Benz Operating Fluids Specifications, MB BeVo 310.1, e.g. on the Internet at http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com. Or contact a qualified workshop. Always use a suitable coolant, even in countries with high temperatures!

Otherwise, the engine cooling system will not be adequately protected against corrosion and overheating.

Info

Have the coolant replaced regularly at a qualified workshop and have the change confirmed in the service booklet.

When handling coolant, observe the important safety information on operating fluids. Read more.

The coolant is a mixture of water and corrosion/antifreeze agent. It provides:
  • Corrosion protection
  • Antifreeze protection
  • Raising the boiling point
When the corrosion/antifreeze agent is filled as specified, the boiling point of the coolant in operation is approx. 130 °C..

The proportion of corrosion/antifreeze agent in the engine cooling system should

  • be at least 50 %. This protects the engine cooling system down to approx. −37 °Cagainst freezing.
  • not exceed 55 % (antifreeze protection down to −45 °C). Otherwise, heat is dissipated less effectively.
Mercedes-Benz recommends a corrosion/antifreeze concentrate in accordance with MB BeVo 310.1.

Info

When the vehicle is first delivered, a coolant is filled that ensures antifreeze and corrosion protection.

The coolant is checked at every maintenance interval at a qualified workshop.

Windscreen washer system

Important Safety Notes

WARNING

If windshield washer concentrate gets onto hot engine or exhaust components, it may ignite. Risk of fire and injury!

Make sure no windshield washer concentrate gets next to the filler opening.

NOTE

Do not use distilled or deionized water in the washer fluid reservoir. Otherwise, the level sensor may be damaged.

Only windshield washer fluids MB SummerFit and MB WinterFit are mixable with each other. Otherwise, the spray nozzles may become clogged.

When handling windshield washer fluid, observe the important safety information on operating fluids. Read more.

At temperatures above freezing point:

Fill the washer fluid reservoir with a mixture of water and windshield washer fluid, e.g. MB SummerFit.

Mix 1 part MB SummerFit with 100 parts water.

At temperatures below freezing point:

Fill the washer fluid reservoir with a mixture of water and windshield washer fluid, e.g. MB WinterFit.

See the information on the antifreeze container for the correct mixing ratio.

Info

Mix washer fluid with windshield washer fluid all year round, e.g. with MB SummerFit or MB WinterFit.

The Mercedes E-Class W212 (model years 2009–2016) requires responsible handling of operating fluids to avoid environmental pollution and damage to the vehicle. Information on topping up and changing engine oil, coolant and brake fluid serves to maintain safety and the value of the vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz expressly recommends the use of approved fluids and service by authorized workshops. In this way, the vehicle's premium standard is consistently maintained during servicing as well.

The E-Class thus remains a benchmark for quality and sustainable engineering.
