Bleeding the brake circuit

~3min read

Essential equipment

brake bleeding equipment (Renault approved)
diagnostic tool

Precautions to observe during brake circuit bleeding:

  • Check the brake fluid levels in the brake circuit and in the bleeding equipment.
  • The brake control system circuit must be free of any hydraulic or electrical fault.

I - BLEEDING THE BRAKE CIRCUIT WITHOUT CONTROL SYSTEMS

WARNING

Special precaution during brake circuit bleeding: the ignition must be switched off so that the solenoid valves of the hydraulic unit are not activated.

  • This procedure applies after removing or replacing any of the following:
  • the master cylinder,
  • the brake fluid,
  • the hydraulic unit (new and pre-filled),
  • a rigid pipe,
  • a flexible hose,
  • the reservoir,
  • a caliper.
  • Position the vehicle on a two-post lift.
  • Connect the bleeding equipment to the vehicle's brake fluid reservoir (see the vehicle owner's handbook).
  • Fit the drain bottles onto the bleed screws.
  • Bleed the circuit by opening the bleed screws in the following order (do not forget to close them after the operation):
  • rear right circuit,
  • front left circuit,
  • rear left circuit,
  • front right circuit.
  • With the engine off, check the pedal travel; if it is not correct, repeat this bleeding procedure.
  • Top up the brake fluid level in the reservoir after disconnecting the bleeding equipment. Check that the bleed screws are tightened and that the sealing caps are in place.
  • Induce a brake regulation during a road test to check whether the brake pedal travel is correct. If the pedal travel becomes incorrect during the road test, follow the brake regulation circuit bleeding procedure.

II - BLEEDING THE BRAKE REGULATION CIRCUIT

  • This procedure applies after a road test with brake regulation during which the pedal travel becomes incorrect.
  • Position the vehicle on a two-post lift.
  • Connect (see the bleeding unit operating instructions):
  • the brake circuit bleeding unit tool (Renault approved) to the vehicle brake circuit,
  • the diagnostic tool.
  • Fit the drain bottles onto the bleed screws.
  • Bleed the regulation circuit using the diagnostic tool.
  • Activate command SC006 "bleeding of the hydraulic unit and brake circuits".
  • Follow the diagnostic tool instructions.
Note: Throughout the bleeding procedure, alternately press and release the brake pedal (pumping action).
  • Disconnect the bleeding unit.
  • Top up the brake fluid level in the reservoir.
  • Check the tightening of the bleed screws and the presence of the sealing caps.
  • Induce a brake regulation during a road test to check whether the brake pedal travel is correct. If the pedal travel becomes incorrect during the road test, follow the brake regulation circuit bleeding procedure

As a result, a quantity of brake fluid greater than the capacity of the circuit may be used.
