Brake fluid

BRAKE FLUID REPLACEMENT INTERVAL

The design of our brakes, in particular our disc brakes (hollow pistons that transmit little heat, small volume of fluid in the cylinder, sliding calipers that avoid a reserve of fluid in the least-cooled area of the wheel), keeps the risk of vapour lock to a minimum, even under intensive brake use (mountainous areas). However, current brake fluids degrade slightly during the first months of use due to slight moisture absorption. For this reason, a fluid change is recommended: see the maintenance booklet.

1 - Topping up the level

Brake pad wear causes a gradual drop in the brake fluid level in the reservoir.

Do not top up to compensate for this drop; the level is restored when the pads are next replaced. However, the brake fluid level must never fall below the minimum mark.

2 - Approved brake fluid

Mixing two incompatible brake fluids in the brake circuit can cause serious leaks, mainly due to deterioration of the seals.

To avoid such risks, use only brake fluids tested and approved by our laboratories and complying with standard SAE J 1703-DOT4.

For optimum braking performance, RENAULT recommends a brake fluid with low viscosity when cold (maximum 750 mm²/s at -40 °C).
