General Information on the Front Drive Mechanism
Drive power is transmitted from the transaxle differential to the drive wheels through the drive shafts. The right and left shafts are of different lengths; constant velocity joints (CV joints) are installed at each end of each shaft.
Ball-type constant velocity joints are installed on the outer ends of the shafts on all models. These joints are not serviceable. The outer races of both outer joints terminate in splined shafts that fit into the splined hubs of the front wheels. The ends of the shafts are threaded to accept the hub retaining nut.
Tripod-type constant velocity joints are installed on the inner ends of the drive shafts on all models except those with 3S-GE engines. The inner joint outer races terminate in splined shafts that connect to the differential side gears of the transaxle.
On models with 3S-FE engines, the inner section of the right drive shaft has an additional bearing support located on a bracket attached to the engine.
