Front Axle Drive Shafts

Installation of Front Drive Shafts

~2min read

  • · Before installing the shaft, inspect the transaxle oil seal for signs of damage and, if necessary, replace it. As a rule, it is recommended to replace the seal every time the drive shaft is removed.
  • · Thoroughly clean the shaft splines and the mating surfaces in the transaxle and hub. Apply a small amount of multipurpose grease to the seal lips and the drive shaft splines. Check that the edges of the protective boots are securely seated.
  • · Install a new snap ring onto the inner end of the splined shaft.
  • · Insert the inner end of the splined shaft into the transaxle with the open side of the snap ring facing down until the snap ring contacts the housing. Then, using a soft-faced drift, drive the shaft into the transaxle until the snap ring locks the shaft in the differential.
  • · Make sure the inner end of the splined shaft is fully engaged in the differential by trying to pull it back. The shaft may have 2-3 mm of play, but it must not come out by hand.
  • · Insert the outer end of the shaft into the steering knuckle, then install the lower ball joint to the lower control arm or the steering knuckle. Tighten the nuts and bolts to the specified torque.
  • · Connect the stabilizer bar link to the strut and tighten the nut to the specified torque.
  • · Insert the tie rod end ball stud into the steering knuckle arm and tighten the nut to the specified torque (56 N*m). Install a new cotter pin and spread its ends. If the nut slots do not align with the cotter pin hole, tighten the nut slightly further.
  • · Install the hub nut, using the same method as during removal to hold the hub. Tighten the nut to the specified torque (226 N*m). Check that the hub rotates smoothly.
  • · Install the hub nut cap, insert a new cotter pin and spread its ends.
  • · Fill the transaxle with the specified oil.
  • · Install the lower splash shield in place, if equipped.
  • · Install and secure the wheel and lower the vehicle to the ground.
  • · Finally, have the wheel alignment checked at the first opportunity.
