Thermostat Inspection and Installation
Inspection · Lower the thermostat into a container filled with cold water. Heat the water to boiling; the thermostat should open just before boiling begins. If it does not, replace the thermostat. In addition, the thermostat opening temperature can be accurately recorded at this time and compared with the value in the specifications. The opening temperature is also marked on the thermostat itself.
If the thermostat does not close as the water cools, replace it.
Installation · Before installation, thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the thermostat, housing and cover.
· Install a new rubber ring on the thermostat.
· Install the thermostat into the housing (or the cover, depending on engine model) with the pin facing up. On 3S-FE engines, the thermostat cover has a projection for aligning the pin.
· Install the thermostat cover onto the housing studs and tighten the mounting nuts gradually to the specified torque (9 N·m). On 4A-FE engines, connect the wires to the temperature sensor.
· Connect the upper radiator tank hose.
· Fill the cooling system with coolant.
