Replacement of the Engine Cooling System Water Pump, 4A-FE Engine - Removal

~2min read

· Disconnect the negative battery cable.

· Drain the coolant.

· Drain the fluid from the windshield washer reservoir on the right side of the engine compartment, then remove the mounting screws, disconnect the hose and wiring, and remove the reservoir.

· Remove the camshaft cover.

· Disconnect the wiring harness from the alternator and the oil pressure sensor, then move the wiring harness away from the right side of the engine.

· Loosen the drive pulley mounting bolts to the water pump by one to two turns (the bolts are easier to loosen while the drive belt is still installed).

· Loosen the alternator pivot and adjusting bolts, then remove the adjusting bolt and remove the belt from the pulleys. On models with power steering, also remove the power steering pump drive belt.

· Fully remove the pulley mounting bolts from the water pump shaft.

· Remove the bolts and remove the upper and center timing belt covers.

· Remove the bolt securing the engine oil level gauge guide tube to the coolant pipe at the rear of the water pump, then pull the tube out from the rear of the oil pump housing and remove it from the engine compartment. Make sure the O-ring is still on the lower end of the tube.

· On models with power steering, remove the bolt securing the power steering pump bracket to the cylinder head, then loosen the pump mounting bolts and move the pump back as far as possible.

· Disconnect the wires from the coolant temperature gauge sensor on the coolant pipe connecting the water pump to the cylinder head.

· Remove the bolts and remove the support bracket from the rear coolant pipe. · Remove the two nuts securing the water pump pipe to the cylinder head, remove the pipe from the studs, and remove the gasket.

· Remove the bolts securing the water pump to the right end of the cylinder block, then remove the assembly by moving it past the timing belt. Remove the water pump pulley and the O-ring from the cylinder block.

· Place the assembly on a workbench, release the clamps, and disconnect the coolant pipe and hose from the rear side of the water pump.

· Remove the bolts and remove the rear water pump cover. Remove the gasket.
