Bleeding Air from Power Steering Hydraulic System
In this manual: Suspension and Steering
~1min read
This procedure is required only if the steering hydraulic system has been disconnected.
- · Remove the power steering fluid reservoir filler cap and fill the system to the MAX level.
- · Start the engine and let it idle. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock three or four times to bleed the air. Hold the steering wheel at each lock for two to three seconds.
- · With the engine running, check the fluid level in the reservoir and make sure the fluid is not foaming and contains no air bubbles. Stop the engine and make sure the fluid level in the reservoir drops by no more than 5 mm compared with the running engine. If anything is wrong, perform the operations described below.
- · Disconnect the return hose from the reservoir and plug the reservoir opening. Add fresh fluid to the reservoir to the specified level. Ask an assistant to be ready to start and stop the engine on your command. Prepare a container for the fluid that will flow out of the return hose.
- · Ask the assistant to start the engine and set the speed to 1000 rpm. After 1-2 seconds fluid will start to flow out of the return hose. As soon as this happens, have the assistant stop the engine immediately. · Top up the fluid level in the reservoir and repeat the procedure described in the previous step. Repeat this procedure until the fluid flowing out of the return hose no longer contains air bubbles (maintain the fluid level in the reservoir).
- · Remove the temporary plug and connect the return hose to the reservoir. Do this as quickly as possible to avoid large fluid losses and to avoid emptying the system, otherwise the entire procedure must be repeated from the beginning.
- · Repeat the bleeding procedure described above, performing the first four steps.
