Timing Belt Replacement (4A-FE Engine) - Inspection
· Carefully inspect the belt for damage or signs of deterioration. Pay particular attention to the tooth roots for signs of incipient cracks.
· In addition to periodic replacement according to the maintenance schedule, the timing belt must be replaced regardless of age or mileage if it shows any defects or if it has been contaminated with water, oil or steam.
· Make sure the tensioner pulley rotates smoothly without binding.
· Check the free length of the tensioner spring. If it does not meet the specification (46.0 mm), replace it.
Installation (for 3S-FE engine) · Before installing the timing belt, check that the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket(s) align with the marks on the inner timing belt cover, and that the TDC marks on the crankshaft sprocket and the oil pump housing align. For certainty, temporarily install the lower timing belt cover and the crankshaft pulley and check whether the notch on the pulley aligns with the mark on the cover. After checking, remove the pulley and cover again.
· Install the timing belt over the sprockets and tensioner pulleys, taking care not to change the position of the sprockets and making sure the belt is aligned with the sprocket flanges. If reinstalling the same belt, make sure the arrow marked on the belt during removal points in the correct direction and that the marks on the belt and sprocket align. Install the right engine mount and tighten the bolts.
· Loosen the tensioner bolt and allow the spring to move the tensioner pulley against the belt until it stops. Do not tighten the bolt yet. To install the tensioner, perform the following steps:
a) Install the outer timing belt guide with the concave side facing out, then install the lower timing belt cover with a new gasket (if equipped) and tighten the bolts.
b) Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolt to the specified torque. c) Turn the crankshaft clockwise almost two full revolutions, then slowly rotate it until the TDC marks align. If the marks do not align, do not turn the crankshaft counterclockwise; remove the timing belt and repeat the installation procedure.
d) Turn the crankshaft clockwise one full revolution and continue turning until the timing mark aligns with the 450 BTDC mark on the lower timing belt cover.
e) Tighten the tensioner bolt to the specified torque (24 N·m).
