Technical data. Engine oil - severe operating conditions. Engine oil - quality and capacity. Coolant - quality and capacity. Transmission fluid - quality and capacity
Choosing the correct engine oil, transmission fluid and coolant for the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) is essential for long service life. This section explains the recommended specifications, fill capacities and requirements for severe operating conditions. It also provides information on brake fluid, power steering fluid and fuel tank capacity. Checking tips support maintenance reliability.
Engine oil - severe operating conditions
Severe operating conditions can lead to abnormally high oil temperatures or abnormally high oil consumption. Some examples of severe operating conditions are listed below.
On longer journeys under the following conditions, check the oil level more frequently:
- when towing a caravan or trailer
- when driving in mountainous terrain
- when driving at high speeds
- at temperatures below -30 °C or above +40 °C.
The above also applies to shorter journeys at low temperatures.
Under severe operating conditions, choose a fully synthetic engine oil, which provides additional protection for the engine.
Volvo recommends:
To meet the requirements for the engine service interval, all engines are filled at the factory with a specially adapted synthetic engine oil. The oil was selected with great
care, taking into account service life, startability, fuel consumption and environmental impact.
To comply with the recommended service intervals, approved engine oil must be used.
Always use the specified oil quality when topping up and when changing the oil, otherwise service life, startability, fuel consumption and environmental impact may be adversely affected.
Volvo Car Corporation will not accept any warranty claims if engine oil of the specified quality and viscosity is not used.
Volvo recommends having the oil changed at a Volvo authorized workshop.

The vehicle identification number (VIN) on the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) is located in several places on the vehicle: in the engine compartment, behind the windscreen and in the vehicle document. It is used to uniquely identify the vehicle and is important for service, spare parts and insurance.
Volvo recommends always having the VIN ready when making inquiries or booking service. This ensures that the correct parts and information are used.
The clear placement makes it easy to read, including for inspection organizations and authorities.
