Cooling Fan Thermal Switch Test
GENERAL INFORMATION
Check the thermal switch if the cooling fan does not switch on when the engine is hot. Test condition: thermostat, radiator and cap are serviceable.
The electric fan thermal switch is located on the left side, at mid-height of the radiator.
The thermal switch has two switching stages. At higher temperature it switches the fan to a higher speed stage.
PROCEDURE
1. Check fuse No. 3 of the electric fan in the fuse box/battery holder, replace if necessary. Thermal switch cable colors
Stage 1 red/white Stage 2 red/black + red
2. Check whether the radiator is heating up at the thermal switch area.
3. Disconnect the thermal switch connector. At the wire plug, first connect terminal + (positive) to terminal 1 (red/white wire). The fan should run at low speed. Then connect terminal + to terminal 2 (red/black wire). The fan should run at higher speed. If the fan runs in both cases, replace the thermal switch.
4. If the fan does not run, or runs at only one speed, check the electrical wiring using the wiring diagram. Check the connector contacts and secure connections.
5. Fan mounting torque: 35 N·m.
6. Check operation of the new thermal switch. Start the engine and let it idle until the cooling fan switches on.
