REMOVAL

The thermostat is located in the coolant outlet connection at the front of the cylinder block.

PROCEDURE

1. Drain the coolant.

2. Unscrew the 2 bolts –1– and remove the connecting pipe –2– from the coolant pump. Collect the escaping coolant. Move the pipe with the attached hose aside.

3. Remove the thermostat –4– and O-ring –3–. To do this, turn the thermostat 90° (1/4 turn) counterclockwise and remove it. CHECKING

4. Measure dimension (a) on the thermostat.

5. Heat the thermostat in water. The thermostat must not touch the walls of the container.

6. Using a thermometer, check the opening start and full-open temperatures against the Specifications.

7. After heating the thermostat to + 100°C, dimension (b) must be 7 mm greater than dimension (a). Thermostat valve lift from start of opening to full opening must be at least 7 mm. INSTALLATION

8. After heating the thermostat to + 100°C, dimension (b) must be 7 mm greater than dimension (a). Thermostat valve lift from start of opening to full opening must be at least 7 mm.

9. Install the thermostat.

CAUTION

For engine 1.8 L, insert the thermostat and turn it 90° (1/4 turn) clockwise. Installation position: the thermostat retaining clip must be positioned vertically.

10. Lubricate the new O-ring with coolant and insert it.

11. Tighten the connecting hose to 15 N·m.

12. Fill the cooling system with coolant.

13. On engine 1.8 L with air conditioning: Tighten the air conditioning compressor to 45 N·m and install the ribbed belt.

14. Check the cooling system for leaks.
