Troubleshooting

Bulbs

General information

Replacing bulbs requires the skill of a specialist.

You can replace the following exterior lighting bulbs yourself:

  • Headlamp: halogen bulb for low beam
  • Headlamp: high beam bulb
  • Rear light: all bulbs

The following bulbs may only be replaced by a specialist workshop:

  • Headlamp: xenon lights*
  • Headlamp: turn signal bulb (Longlife bulb)
  • Headlamp: parking light bulb
  • Fog lamp: bulb
  • Fender turn signal bulb

In most cases, you must have a specialist replace defective bulbs. This applies especially to bulbs that can only be accessed from the engine compartment.

If in doubt, we recommend having bulbs replaced by a specialist or at a specialist workshop.

If, however, you want to replace bulbs in the engine compartment yourself, remember that the engine compartment is a hazardous area.

Bulb types

A bulb must always be replaced with a bulb of the same type. The designation is printed on the bulb base.

CAUTION!

  • Use particular caution when working in the engine compartment and when the engine is at operating temperature - risk of burns!
  • Bulbs are under pressure and may burst when replaced - risk of injury!
  • On vehicles equipped with gas discharge headlamps* (xenon lamps), handle the high-voltage component correctly. Improper handling can be fatal!
  • When replacing bulbs, take care not to injure yourself on the sharp components inside the headlamp housing.
  • Warning!

    • Remove the ignition key before working on the electrical system - risk of short circuit!
    • Switch off the lights/parking lights before replacing a bulb.

    Environment

Ask a specialist workshop about the disposal of defective bulbs.

    Note

    • For your own safety and that of other road users, make sure that all lighting on your vehicle (especially exterior lighting) works properly.
    • Obtain a replacement bulb of the same type before starting the replacement.
    • Do not touch the bulb with bare hands. Use a cloth or paper to prevent fingerprints from being left on the reflector: when the bulb is lit, the heat causes them to evaporate, leaving marks on the reflector and rendering it ineffective.
