Manual release of the parking brake

If there is no power supply or in case of an electrical fault, the parking brake can be released manually.

Before manually releasing the parking brake or switching off the engine with the brake released, make sure the automatic transmission is in position P, see

page 66. Observe the indicators in the instrument cluster at the same time.

Additionally place a wheel chock. Otherwise the vehicle may roll downhill on a slope.◄

If the automatic transmission must also be released at the same time, follow this sequence:

1. First release the parking brake manually.
2. Then release the transmission manually.

Refer to towing and jump-starting the engine from an external power source.

Release

1. Open the cover in the left side panel of the luggage compartment.
2. Remove the first-aid kit and the warning triangle. Secure the warning triangle holder.
3. Take the release tool from the vehicle tool kit and attach it to the release terminal.

4. Pull the tool upwards with force, overcoming resistance, see

arrow, until you feel the resistance increase noticeably and hear the parking brake release.

5. Put the release tool, warning triangle and first-aid kit back in place and close the cover in the left side panel of the luggage compartment.

Have the cause of the fault rectified at the nearest BMW service center. If the cause of the manual release of the parking brake is a system fault, the parking brake can only be restored to working order by qualified specialists.◄

After manual release, the actual state of the parking brake may not match the indication of the warning lamp.◄
