Gasoline engine: checking the oil level

Your vehicle is equipped with an electronic oil level control.

The oil level information is reliable only if the measurement is made with the engine at operating temperature, i.e. after the vehicle has been driven at least 10 km. You can monitor the oil level while driving or when stopped on a level surface with the engine running.

The current oil level can be shown on the display in the instrument cluster.

1. Press button 1 on the turn signal lever up or down until the corresponding symbol and the message "OIL" appear on the display.

2. Press button 2 on the turn signal lever.

The oil level is measured and shown on the display.

Possible Displays

1 Oil level is normal

2 Oil level is being measured. When stopped on a level surface this process may take up to 3 minutes, and while driving up to 5 minutes.

3 Oil level is at minimum. At the first opportunity add 1 liter of engine oil, see also section "Adding engine oil".

4 Oil level is too high

Excess oil damages the engine.

Have the vehicle checked at a BMW service center.◄

5 Oil level sensor fault. Do not add oil. You may continue driving, but make sure the newly calculated distance to the next "Oilservice" service is not exceeded. Have the system checked at a BMW service center as soon as possible.
