Obstacle Detection Systems
Parking Assist System
Ultrasonic Parking Assist System

The parking assist system (also called
parking pilot) helps the driver judge the distance between the vehicle and obstacles behind it by changing the frequency of the audible signal as the vehicle approaches an obstacle.
However, knowing that this feature is available does not release the driver from the obligation to park with care. The system consists of four ultrasonic sensors mounted in the rear bumper.
Note Equipment installed within the operating area of the system causes malfunctions in its operation.
Arming
The system switches on automatically when reverse gear is selected.
An obstacle is signaled audibly. The smaller the distance to the obstacle, the shorter the intervals between signals.
When less than 40 cm remains to the obstacle, a continuous tone will sound.
Warning In certain situations, multiple reflections of sound waves and external sound sources may prevent correct detection of an obstacle.Disarming
The system is switched off in the drive and park positions, or when a fault occurs.
The system may not detect an obstacle if the vehicle is moving at a speed above 10 km/h.
Malfunction
If a fault occurs, the warning lamp will illuminate
.
Additionally, if the system does not work due to temporary conditions, such as snow on the sensors, the lamp will illuminate
.
Caution The parking assist system should be regarded as an auxiliary function. The driver is obliged to monitor the conditions behind the vehicle. The audible warning signal may differ depending on the objects. The audible warning signal may not work if the sensor is frozen or covered with dirt or mud. Do not apply pressure to or scrape the sensor surface, as this may damage its coating. The system may malfunction when the vehicle is driven on uneven surfaces, such as forest, gravel, rough or sloped roads.
The parking assist system may not recognize sharp objects, thick winter clothing or other thick, soft materials that absorb ultrasound.
Caution The parking assist system may malfunction when it receives other ultrasonic signals (the sound of metal or the noise of pneumatic brakes on commercial vehicles). Clean dirty sensors with a soft sponge and clean water. When reversing, look in the rear-view mirrors or turn your head to the rear. Normal precautions should be observed when reversing. Do not apply pressure to the sensor or clean it with a high-pressure water jet, as this may damage it.
Caution The upper part of the vehicle may strike an obstacle before it is detected by the sensor. For this reason, the driver should always monitor the conditions behind the vehicle. The parking assist system will work correctly with flat vertical surfaces.
