Front airbag

~3min read

The vehicle is equipped with front airbags for driver and passenger (where fitted) and a knee airbag for the driver (where fitted).

The front airbags for driver and passenger and the driver's knee airbag (where fitted) protect the occupants of the front seats in the event of a moderate frontal impact by inflating an airbag cushion between the occupant and the steering wheel or dashboard, respectively.

Non-deployment in other types of impact (side, rear, rollover, etc.) is therefore not a system fault.

In a frontal collision, an electronic control unit triggers inflation of the airbag if required.

The airbag cushion inflates instantly, protecting the bodies of the front occupants from striking vehicle parts that could cause injury. The cushion deflates immediately afterwards.

The driver and passenger front airbags and the driver's knee airbag (where fitted) are not a replacement but a supplement to the seat belts, which should always be worn when driving, as required by law in Europe and in most non-European countries.

In a collision, an unbelted occupant would move forward and come into contact with the still-inflating cushion. In this case, the protection provided by the airbag is reduced.

The front airbags may not deploy in the following cases:

  • Impacts with highly deformable objects where the front of the vehicle is not affected (for example, the bumper striking a guardrail);
  • Underrunning other vehicles (e.g.

    under a truck) or guardrails;

Since they provide no additional protection beyond the seat belts, their deployment would be unnecessary. Non-deployment in these cases is therefore not a system fault.

Note

Do not attach stickers or other objects to the steering wheel, the passenger airbag cover or the side roof trim. Do not place objects on the passenger-side dashboard, as they may prevent the passenger airbag from inflating correctly and could cause serious injury to vehicle occupants.

It consists of an airbag cushion that inflates immediately from a compartment in the centre of the steering wheel.

Note

Always keep your hands on the steering wheel rim while driving so the airbag can deploy without obstruction in the event of activation. Do not drive leaning forward; sit with your back against the upright backrest.

Note

Serious danger:
If the vehicle has a front passenger airbag, never install a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat. Airbag deployment in a collision could cause fatal injuries to the child. If absolutely necessary, always deactivate the front passenger airbag when a child seat is installed on the front seat. Also move the front passenger seat to its rearmost position to prevent the child seat from contacting the dashboard.

Even where there are no legal requirements, for the best protection of adults it is advisable to reactivate the airbag immediately after transporting children.

Manual deactivation of the passenger front and side airbags (where fitted)

If it is absolutely necessary to carry a child on the front passenger seat, the front and side airbag for protection of the upper body and pelvis on the passenger side (side bag) (where fitted) can be deactivated.

The warning lighton the
instrument panel stays on until the passenger airbag is reactivated.

Note

To deactivate the passenger airbag and the side bag for upper body and pelvis protection (where fitted), see the chapter "Instrument panel and controls", sections "Multifunction display" and "Reconfigurable multifunction display".
