Front airbags

The front airbags (driver's and passenger's) and the driver's knee airbag (for versions/markets where provided) protect front passengers in a frontal collision of medium-to-high impact energy, by deploying between the passenger and the steering wheel or the dashboard.

The airbags not deploying in other types of collision (side, rear, rollover, etc.) does not indicate a malfunction of the system.

The front airbags (driver's and passenger's) do not replace the seat belts, but supplement them. Always wear your seat belt, as required by law in Europe and in most countries outside Europe.

In a collision, a person who is not wearing a seat belt moves forward and may strike the airbag while it is still inflating. In this situation, the protection provided by the airbag is greatly reduced.

The front airbags may not deploy in frontal collisions with easily deformable objects that do not cover the front surface of the vehicle (for example,

hitting a crash barrier with the bumper, or driving under another vehicle or under a barrier (for example, under lorries or under motorway crash barriers).

The airbags do not deploy in the above circumstances because they may not provide any additional protection beyond the seat belts, so deployment would be inappropriate. The airbags not deploying in these cases does not indicate a malfunction of the system.

In low-energy impacts, the airbags do not deploy. For this reason, always wear your seat belts: in a side collision they keep passengers in the correct position and prevent the body from sliding out in the event of a very strong impact.

Driver's front airbag

It consists of an airbag that inflates instantly, housed in a special recess in the centre of the steering wheel, fig. 59.

Passenger's front airbag

It consists of an airbag that inflates instantly, housed in a special recess in the dashboard, fig. 60. Its volume is greater than that of the driver's airbag.

Passenger's front airbag and child seats

ALWAYS follow the instructions on the label affixed to the passenger-side sun visor, fig. 61.

Driver's knee airbag (for versions/markets where provided)

It is housed in a dedicated recess under the steering column, fig. 62. It provides additional protection in a frontal collision.
