Pinpoint Tests

PINPOINT TEST A: PTU DRIVE MOTOR

For wiring diagrams and connector information, refer to Cell 34 of the Wiring Diagrams.

Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

The PTU actuator motor consists of a reversible DC motor, gear reduction unit, drive cam, shift fork and a pair of position sensors. The Four-Wheel Drive Module switches power and ground on the PTUMC+ and PTUMC- circuits to engage or disengage the PTU.

DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

Trouble Code Description Fault Trigger Condition
Four-Wheel Drive C0090:16 4WD/AWD Power Transfer Unit Actuator: Circuit Voltage Below Threshold The Four-Wheel Drive Module will set this DTC when it detects less than 9 V on the PTUMC power supply circuit when commanded to shift. A short to ground in the power supply circuit usually causes this condition. Depending on the command when the fault was detected, the fault may be in the PTUMC+ or PTUMC- circuit.
Four-Wheel Drive C0090:18 4WD/AWD Power Transfer Unit Actuator: Circuit Current Below Threshold PTU motor current was 0 amperes while the PTU motor was commanded on.
Four-Wheel Drive C0090:19 4WD/AWD Power Transfer Unit Actuator: Circuit Current Above Threshold PTU motor current detected (> 1 A) when motor command is 0 % DC.
Four-Wheel Drive C0090:71 4WD/AWD Power Transfer Unit Actuator: Stuck Cam position sensor (A) and shift fork position sensor (B) did not indicate movement when the motor drive was commanded. FIRST, REPAIR any PTU position sensor faults.
Four-Wheel Drive C00A2:19 Powertrain Control Module Power Transfer Unit Control Circuit Driver: Circuit Current Above Threshold This DTC is set when the Four-Wheel Drive Module detects excessive current in the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) actuator drive.

For wiring diagrams and connector information, refer to Cell 34 of the Wiring Diagrams.

Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

The rear drive contains a three-phase reversible motor. The motor actuates the clutch in the RDU to engage or disengage all wheel drive. The AWD module controls the motor by supplying power on the RDMC X circuits. The motor position is fed back to the AWD module on the RDMP X circuits. When the AWD module engages, the AWD module will move the motor from a hard stop (clutch fully released) to the clutch kiss point. The kiss point is the maximum clutch engagement point where 0 torque is transmitted through the clutch.

PINPOINT TEST N: C0095:44, C0096:54

Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

The RDU contains a drive motor, ball ramp, and multi-plate clutch pack. During manufacturing, the clutch friction characteristics are measured and recorded in a database for each RDU serial number. This data is required by new AWD modules. Programmed to adjust the RDU operating characteristics. The AWD module checks the value stored in memory when the key is turned on. If the value is missing or invalid, a DTC will be stored and AWD functionality will be limited. will be present.

AWD - Active Torque Coupling Configuration subroutine requires the technician to manually enter the 16-character alphanumeric serial number from the label on the RDU into the diagnostic scan tool. The scan tool will search the serial number database and program the AWD module with the clutch characteristic data from production.

The AWD module waits to receive network data from other modules over HS-CAN1. The AWD module will set a DTC when it receives invalid or incomplete messages from another module. Incomplete or corrupted messages are usually the result of network traffic preventing the complete message from being received within the calibrated time. Invalid data messages are usually due to a fault in the suspect module or system.
