Overview

The generator is driven by the FEAD belt. When the engine starts, the generator begins producing alternating voltage, which is internally converted to direct voltage. The DC voltage level is controlled by the voltage regulator (located on the rear of the generator) and supplied to the battery.

The PCM controls the voltage regulation setpoint and sends this information to the generator's internal voltage regulator over the LIN communication circuit.

This vehicle is equipped with an Intelligent Battery Management System (load shedding strategy). The BCM monitors battery state of charge using information from the Battery Monitoring Sensor attached to the battery negative terminal, and controls battery charging.

The PCM monitors generator current using the Generator Current Sensor connected to the generator B+ battery cable. Information provided by the Generator Current Sensor is used by the PCM to regulate engine idle stability and torque management.
