Overview

NOTICE: Fuel system repairs must only be made by replacing the failed component(s). Do not attempt to repair fuel system components.

NOTICE: If specified during fuel system component assembly, lubricate any seals only with the specified material. Failure to follow this instruction may result in seal failure and fuel leakage.

Fuel System:

  • closed loop pressure control (CLPC) system.
  • Cigar-shaped fuel tank with a capacity of 17.90 gallons (68 L).
  • fuel pump that operates on 6-12 volts AC depending on load, which supplies fuel under pressure to the fuel pump pressure.
  • fuel lines and vapor lines in a single bundle.
  • uses a single fuel tank container.
  • quick-connect fittings for the fuel and vapor lines.
  • fuel tank filler neck assembly that cannot be modified in any way, which also contains a device that prevents misfueling to allow only unleaded gasoline to be added to the tank.
  • has an Easy Fuel™ (capless) fuel tank filler neck assembly that cannot be modified in any way and is serviced only by installing a new fuel tank filler neck.
  • has an optional fuel fill adapter located inside the spare wheel compartment.
  • FPDM, located under the vehicle on the left side of the front floor.
    • Fuel Pump (FP) Module, consisting of:
  • FP electric module, which supplies fuel under pressure to the high-pressure fuel pump (FP).
  • fuel level sensor.
  • check valve that maintains system pressure after the pump is switched off.
  • pressure relief valve that protects against excess pressure in case of fluid flow restriction.
  • Lifetime fuel filter that provides filtration to protect the fuel injectors from foreign material.

Fuel pump shut-off function

In a moderate or severe collision, the vehicle is equipped with a fuel pump and sender unit shutoff feature that initiates an event notification signal.

The event notification signal is a signal sent from the RCM to the FPDM. Communication between the RCM and the FPDM allows the PCM to shut off the fuel pump.

If the vehicle shuts down after a collision because of this function, the vehicle can be restarted by first turning the ignition to the OFF position and then turning the ignition to the ON position. In some cases the vehicle may not start on the first attempt and one additional ignition cycle may be required.
