Remove the valve cover.
Refer to: Valve Cover (303-01A - 2.3 L EcoBoost (201 kW/273 L PS), Removal and Installation).

NOTE
Rotate the engine only clockwise and only use the crankshaft bolt.
Measure the clearance of each valve at the base circle, with the lobe pointing away from the tappet.
Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance of each valve and record its position.
Use general equipment: Feeler Gauge

NOTE
There are two numbers on the valve lifter. One is the date code, and the other is the thickness of the valve lifter.
The date code "R0605" represents the year of manufacture (R), month (06) and day (05).
The lifter marked N650 has a thickness of 3.650 mm.
Select the tappets using this formula: tappet thickness = measured clearance + existing tappet thickness - nominal clearance.
The nominal clearance is:
- Intake: 0.25 mm (0.0095 in).
- Exhaust: 0.36 mm (0.0142 in).
NOTE
Acceptable clearances after full installation:
- Intake: 0.19-0.31 mm (0.0075-0.0122 in).
- Exhaust: 0.30-0.42 mm (0.0118-0.0165 in).
Select the tappet size closest to the ideal available tappet thickness and mark the installation location.

If the dimensions of any tappets do not meet the specifications, install new tappets at those locations.

NOTE
Perform the following step only if adjustment is required.
Remove the camshafts.
