Fuel Tank and Lines — Overview. Description and Operation
Overview
Fuel Tank and Lines
The fuel tank and lines consist of the following:
- single-chamber fuel tank.
- lifetime fuel filter in the tank (serviced as part of the fuel pump).
- Easy Fuel™ fuel tank filler tube (capless), which cannot be modified in any way and is serviced only as a complete fuel tank filler neck replacement.
- fuel lines (liquid and vapor).
- FPDM
- fuel tank pressure sensor (part of the fuel vapor tube assembly).
- fuel pump and sender.
Vehicles:
- have a fuel level sensor installed on the fuel pump.
- have a fuel tank filler neck with a restrictor plate that allows only unleaded gasoline to be pumped into the fuel tank.
- have an Easy Fuel™ fuel tank filler neck (capless), which cannot be modified in any way.
- has an optional refueling adapter located in the luggage compartment.
- have a lifetime fuel filter in the fuel tank; the fuel filter is serviced as part of the fuel pump.
- have fuel lines (liquid and vapor) bundled together with the brake lines, mounted on the underside of the floor pan and covered by a protective shield.
- have spring-lock quick connections on the fuel lines.
- have a FPDM that shuts off the fuel supply in the event of a collision.
Fuel pump shut-off function
In a moderate or severe collision, the vehicle is equipped with a fuel pump and sensor shut-off function, which initiates an event notification signal.
The event notification signal is a signal sent from the RCM to the FPDM. Communication between the RCM and FPDM allows the PCM to disable the fuel pump.
If the vehicle shuts down after a collision because of this function, the vehicle can be restarted by first turning the ignition to the OFF position and then turning the ignition to the ON position. In some cases the vehicle may not start on the first attempt and one additional ignition cycle may be required.
