Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

Refer to: Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) - System Operation and Component Description (419-01C Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) - Vehicles With: Keyless Entry and Push Button Start, Description and Operation).

The RFA module supplies voltage to the PATS transceiver. If the RFA module does not detect a passive key from the PATS antennas, it activates the PATS transceiver as a backup to attempt to detect a programmed passive key. The RFA module also activates the PATS transceiver for key programming procedures. The RFA module starts the key polling sequence by supplying voltage to the transceiver. Once the PATS transceiver is powered, the RFA module sends a signal to the transceiver on the transmit circuit. When the transceiver receives the signal from the RFA module, it reads the PATS key and generates a challenge-response to the RFA module signal, and sends its response on the receive circuit.

U0167:00 PATS Ignition Status: Signal Comparison Failure Set when the RFA module does not receive the expected target identifier from the PCM over HS-CAN. The target identifier is sent only once per ignition cycle and is sent within milliseconds after the ignition is turned off.
U0426:00 Lost Communication With ECM/PCM "A": No Sub Type Information Set when the RFA module does not receive the expected target identifier from the PCM over HS-CAN. The target identifier is sent only once per ignition cycle and is sent within milliseconds after the ignition is turned off.

Possible Causes

  • Network Concern
  • Low Battery Charge
  • RFA module

DIAGNOSTIC TEST G: U0167:00 OR U0426:00
G1 CHECK THE BATTERY CHARGE
  • NOTE: It may be necessary to check the battery voltage during engine cranking to make sure the battery voltage does not drop too low and cause the concern. Perform the battery condition test.
REFER TO: Battery (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Diagnosis and Testing).

Did the battery pass the battery condition test?
Yes GO to G2
No CHARGE or REPLACE the battery.
REFER TO: Battery (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Removal and Installation).
G2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION WITH THE RFA (REMOTE FUNCTION ACTUATOR) MODULE
  • The ignition is on.
  • Using a scan tool, perform the network test.

Does the RFA module respond to the diagnostic scan tool?
Yes GO to G3
No
REFER TO: Communication Network (418-00 Communication Network, Diagnosis and Testing).
G3 CHECK THE RFA (REMOTE FUNCTION ACTUATOR) MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)
  • Using the diagnostic scan tool, perform the RFA module self-test.

Are there any RFA module diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present?
Yes REFER TO the RFA Module DTC Chart in this section.
No GO to G4
G4 RECHECK THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM SELF-TEST
  • The ignition is on.
  • Using the diagnostic scan tool, clear the PCM diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
  • Wait 10 seconds.
  • Using the diagnostic scan tool, perform a PCM self-test.

Is DTC U0167:00 or U0426:00 still present?
Yes GO to G5
No The system is currently operating correctly. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent condition.
G5 CHECK THE RFA (REMOTE FUNCTION ACTUATOR) MODULE FOR PROPER OPERATION
  • Disconnect and inspect all RFA module connectors.
  • Repair:
    • corrosion (install new connectors or terminals, clean the module pins)
    • damaged or bent terminals/pins - install new terminals/pins
    • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
  • Reconnect all RFA module connectors and make sure they are properly seated and latched.
  • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
Yes CHECK OASIS for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a TSB exists for this condition, STOP this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSB applies to this concern, INSTALL a new RFA module.
REFER TO: Remote Function Actuator (RFA) Module (419-10 Multifunction Electronic Modules, Removal and Installation).
No The system is currently operating correctly. The concern may have been caused by module connections. Refer to the root cause of any connector or terminal issues.
