Catalytic Converter
Your vehicle has various emission control system components and a catalytic converter that help it meet applicable exhaust emission standards.
To make sure the catalytic converter and other emission control components continue to operate correctly:
- Do not crank the engine for more than 10 seconds at a time.
- Do not start the engine with a spark plug wire disconnected.
- Do not start the vehicle by pushing or towing. Use jumper cables.
- Use only the specified fuel.
- Do not turn the ignition off while the vehicle is moving.
- Avoid running out of fuel.
- Have the items listed in the maintenance schedule serviced at the specified intervals.
The scheduled maintenance items are listed. Scheduled maintenance information is essential for the life and operation of your vehicle and its emission control system.
If you use anything other than genuine Ford, Motorcraft, or Ford-approved parts for repair replacements or for servicing emission control-related components, such non-Ford parts must be equivalent to original Ford Motor Company parts in performance and durability.
The Service Engine Soon indicator, charging system warning lamp, or coolant temperature warning lamp illuminates, fluid leaks, unusual odors, smoke, or loss of engine power may indicate that the emission control system is not operating properly.
A malfunctioning or damaged exhaust system may allow exhaust gas to enter the vehicle. Have a damaged or malfunctioning exhaust system inspected and repaired immediately. Do not make unauthorized modifications to your vehicle or engine. By law, vehicle owners and anyone who manufactures, repairs, services, sells, leases, exchanges vehicles, or manages a vehicle fleet is prohibited from intentionally removing an emission control device or rendering it inoperative. Information about your vehicle's emission control system is located on the Vehicle Emission Control Information label installed on or near the engine. This label also shows the engine displacement.
