Running Out of Fuel
Running out of fuel may cause damage that is not covered by the vehicle warranty.
If your vehicle runs out of fuel:
- Add at least 1.3 gal (5 L) of fuel to restart the engine.
- You may need to turn the ignition from off to on several times after refueling so the fuel system can pump fuel from the tank to the engine. When restarting, the cranking time is a few seconds longer than normal.
Filling a Portable Fuel Container
Follow these guidelines to avoid the buildup of an electrostatic charge that may produce a spark when filling an ungrounded fuel container:
- Use only an approved fuel container to transfer fuel into your vehicle. Place the container on the ground while filling it.
- Do not fill a fuel container while it is inside your vehicle (including the cargo area).
- Keep the fuel pump nozzle in contact with the fuel tank while refueling.
- Do not use a device to hold the pump nozzle lever in the fill position.
Adding Fuel from a Portable Fuel Container
When refueling the vehicle fuel tank from a portable fuel container, use the fuel filler funnel supplied with your vehicle.
When refueling the vehicle fuel tank from a portable fuel container, perform the following steps:
- Fully open the fuel tank filler door.
- Fully insert the fuel tank funnel into the fuel tank filler pipe.

- Add fuel to your vehicle from the fuel container.
- Remove the fuel tank funnel.
- Fully close the fuel tank filler door.
- Clean the fuel tank funnel and place it back in the vehicle or dispose of it properly.
