Starting and Stopping the Engine

Engine Block Heater (if equipped)

~2min read

The heater acts as a starting aid by warming the engine coolant. This allows the climate control system to respond quickly. The kit includes a heater element (installed in the engine block) and a wiring harness. You can connect the system to a grounded 120 V AC electrical outlet.

We recommend that you do the following for safe and proper operation:

  • Use a 16 gauge outdoor extension cord certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). This extension cord must be suitable for outdoor use, in cold temperatures, and clearly marked "Suitable for Outdoor Use." Do not use an indoor extension cord outdoors. This may cause electric shock or create a fire hazard.
  • Use the shortest extension cord possible.
  • Do not use multiple extension cords.
  • Make sure the extension cord plug and heater cord connections are free and dry from water during operation. Failure to do so may result in electric shock or fire.
  • Make sure your vehicle is parked on a clean area free of combustible materials.
  • Make sure the heater, heater cord and extension cord are securely connected.
  • Check for heat at any electrical connection after the system has been running for approximately 30 minutes.
  • Make sure the engine block heater system is checked for proper operation before winter.

Using the Engine Block Heater

The engine block heater outlet is located in a housing in the lower left grille. Open the hinged round cover and make sure the outlet terminals are clean and dry before use. Wipe them with a dry cloth if necessary.

The heater consumes 0.4 to 1.0 kWh of energy per hour of use. The system does not have a thermostat. It reaches maximum temperature after approximately three hours of operation. If you use the heater for more than three hours, it will not improve system performance and will use unnecessary electrical energy.
