Driving tips

Fuel-efficient driving

~2min read
Fuel consumption depends on various factors, such as driving style and conditions, and the vehicle's state of maintenance.

Fuel consumption can be improved by taking the following precautions:

  • Accelerate and decelerate moderately and smoothly.
  • Maintain a constant speed.
  • Anticipate stops. Slow down rather than bringing the vehicle to a complete stop.
  • Make as few stops as possible. When running errands, go to the furthest destination first and then head home.
  • Keep the windows closed when driving at high speeds.
  • Maintain reasonable speeds. (Driving at 105 km/h consumes 15% less fuel than at 121 km/h).
  • Make sure the tyres are inflated to the specified pressure and are of the recommended size.
  • Use the recommended engine oil.
  • Carry out all scheduled maintenance.
  • Follow the gear shift indicator on the instrument cluster to change gear at the right time. This reduces emissions and fuel consumption. See Warning lamps and indicators for more information on the gear shift indicator on the instrument cluster.
There are also some actions to avoid because they increase fuel consumption:
  • Avoid sudden acceleration.
  • Avoid increasing engine speed before switching off the vehicle.
  • Avoid keeping the engine at idle for long periods.
  • Avoid overheating the vehicle when it is cold.
  • Reduce use of the air conditioning and heating.
  • Avoid using cruise control on hills.
  • Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal while driving.
  • Avoid carrying unnecessary weight (fuel economy drops by about 1 mpg [0.4 km/l] for every 180 kg of weight carried).
  • Avoid fitting non-standard accessories to the vehicle (insect deflectors, roll bars/light bars, electric running boards, ski racks).
  • Avoid driving with misaligned wheels.
  • Avoid coasting with the engine off in neutral.
Precautions in low temperatures

The operation of some components and systems may be affected by temperatures below -25°C.
