Checking the coolant
WARNINGS
- Never remove the coolant reservoir cap while the engine is running or hot.
- Add coolant only when the engine is cold. If the engine is hot, wait 10 minutes for it to cool down.
- Avoid contact of the coolant with skin or eyes. If this occurs, flush the affected area immediately with plenty of water and consult a doctor.
- Undiluted antifreeze is flammable and may ignite if it is spilled onto a hot exhaust pipe.
Your vehicle is fitted with two separate cooling circuits. One cools the engine and the other cools the hybrid system's inverter system controller.
Both circuits work in a similar way, except that the inverter system controller cooling circuit normally operates at a lower temperature and pressure.

Make sure the coolant level is between the MIN and MAX marks. If the coolant level is at or below the MIN mark, add specified coolant immediately.
Note: coolant expands when hot. The level may therefore rise above the MAX mark.
Adding engine coolant
- Remove the filler cap.
- Add engine coolant up to the MAX mark. Do not exceed this mark.
- Refit the filler cap. Turn it until resistance is felt.
Note: Add a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze, or a pre-diluted engine coolant that meets specification. See Capacities and Specifications (page 273). Note: In an emergency, you can add water to the cooling system to reach a garage. Note: Prolonged use of an incorrect engine coolant dilution can damage the engine, for example through corrosion, overheating or freezing.
Adding Inverter System Controller Coolant
- Open the inverter system controller coolant reservoir cap.
- Use a funnel to add pre-diluted coolant to the inverter system controller coolant reservoir.
make sure the level is between the MIN and MAX marks on the inverter system controller coolant reservoir. Use pre-diluted coolant that meets Ford specification.
See Capacities and specifications (page 273).When adding inverter system controller coolant, check the reservoir level at each of the following occasions when you drive the vehicle. If necessary, add enough pre-diluted coolant to reach the correct inverter system controller coolant level.
