In Brief

Diesel Particulate Filter

~1min read

The engine is equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), which filters or traps particulate matter. The DPF is located under the vehicle in the exhaust system.

Depending on a number of factors monitored by the engine control module, the particulate filter may need to clean out accumulated particulate matter. When cleaning is required, the engine control module will begin a cleaning action by heating the exhaust gas temperature. This feature is designed to operate automatically, with limited driver involvement or awareness.

DPF Cleaning (Exhaust Filter)

While DPF cleaning is automatically controlled by the engine control module, the vehicle will need to be driven continuously for approximately 25 minutes and at speeds above 50 km/h to clean the particulate filter effectively.

Driver Messages for the DPF

If the vehicle is used for numerous short trips or extended periods of slow speed operation, the engine control module may not be able to clean the particulate filter effectively. If this occurs, a Driver Information Center (DIC) message will be displayed.

If the vehicle continues to be driven in a manner that prevents effective DPF regeneration, the DPF will become clogged. If this occurs, the engine control module will illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp in the instrument cluster and the DIC will display a message.
