Forward Automatic Braking (FAB)
If the vehicle has Forward Collision Alert (FCA), it also has FAB, which includes Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA). When the system detects a vehicle ahead in your path that is traveling in the same direction as you and you may be about to crash into it, it may provide a braking pulse or automatically brake the vehicle. This may help avoid or reduce the severity of crashes when driving in forward gear. Depending on the situation, the vehicle may automatically brake moderately or firmly. This forward automatic braking is only possible when a vehicle is detected. The FCA indicator light illuminates when a vehicle ahead is detected. See Forward Collision Alert (FCA) System.
The system operates when driving in forward gear between 8 km/h and 60 km/h. It can detect vehicles up to approximately 60 m (197 ft).
Warning
FAB is an emergency collision preparation and mitigation feature and is not designed to prevent crashes. Do not rely on FAB to brake the vehicle. FAB does not brake outside its operating speed range and only responds to detected vehicles.
FAB cannot:
- Detect a vehicle ahead on winding or hilly roads.
- Detect all vehicles, especially trailers, tractors, dirty vehicles, etc.
- Detect a vehicle when weather limits visibility, such as in fog, rain, or snow.
- Detect a vehicle ahead if it is partially blocked by pedestrians or other objects.
Full attention is always required while driving, and you must be ready to act and use the brakes and/or steering to avoid crashes.
FAB may reduce the vehicle speed to a complete stop in an attempt to avoid a potential crash. If this happens, FAB may apply the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) to hold the vehicle stationary. Release the EPB or firmly press the accelerator pedal.
Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA)
IBA may activate when the brake pedal is applied quickly, providing braking assistance based on the closing speed and the distance to the vehicle ahead.
Slight brake pedal pulsation or movement of the pedal during this time is normal, and the brake pedal should continue to be applied as needed. IBA will only deactivate when the brake pedal is released.
FAB and IBA can be turned off through Vehicle Personalization. See Collision Detection Systems in the Vehicle Personalization section.
A system unavailable message may display if:
- The front of the vehicle or the windshield is not clean.
- Heavy rain or snow interferes with object detection.
- There is a problem with the StabiliTrak system.
The FAB system does not need service.
