Lane Keep Assist (LKA)

~3min read

If equipped, LKA can help avoid a crash caused by an unintentional lane departure. It can help by gently turning the steering wheel if the vehicle approaches a detected lane marking without the turn signal being used in that direction. It may also provide a Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system alert when a lane marking is crossed. The LKA system will not assist or provide an LDW alert if it detects that you are actively steering. To override LKA, turn the steering wheel. LKA uses a camera to detect lane markings from 60 km/h to 180 km/h.

  • Provide a warning or sufficient steering assistance to avoid a lane departure or crash.
  • Detect lane markings in bad weather or low visibility conditions. This may occur if the windshield or headlamps are blocked by dirt, snow, or ice, if they are not in proper condition, or if the sun shines directly into the camera.
  • Detect road edges.
  • Detect lane markings on winding or hilly roads.

If LKA detects lane markings on only one side of the road, it will only assist or provide an LDW alert when approaching the lane on the side where the lane markings were detected. Even with LKA and LDW, you must steer the vehicle. Always keep your attention on the road and maintain proper vehicle position in the lane, or vehicle damage, injury, or death may occur. Always keep the windshield, headlamps, and camera sensors clean and in good repair. Do not use LKA in poor weather conditions.

How It Works

The LKA camera sensor is located on the windshield, in front of the rearview mirror.

To turn LKA on or off, pressGMC Terrain. Lane Keep Assist (LKA)on the center console.

When on,GMC Terrain. Lane Keep Assist (LKA)green if LKA is ready to assist and provide LDW alerts. It may help by gently turning the steering wheel and displayGMC Terrain. In addition, there may be three audible chimes, or the driver seat may pulse three times on the right or left, depending on the direction of lane departure.

Take the steering wheel

The LKA system does not steer the vehicle continuously. If LKA does not detect an active driver steering input, an alert, chime, or Driver Information Center (DIC) message may be displayed. Steer the vehicle to dismiss.

When the System Does Not Operate Properly

System performance may be affected by:

  • Vehicles closely ahead.
  • Sudden changes in lighting, such as when driving through tunnels.
  • Sloped roads.
  • Roads with poor lane markings, such as two-lane roads.

If the LKA system does not operate properly when lane markings are clearly visible, cleaning the windshield may help.

A system unavailable message may be displayed if the camera is blocked. The LKA system does not need service.

LKA assistance and/or LDW alerts may occur due to resin traces, shadows, cracks in the road, temporary or construction lane markings, or other road irregularities. This is normal system operation; the vehicle does not need service. Turn LKA off if these conditions persist.
