When the ignition is on, the fuel gauge shows how much fuel is left in the tank.

The arrow on the fuel gauge points to the side of the vehicle where the fuel door is located.

When the gauge is near empty, the low fuel warning light comes on. There is still a small amount of fuel, but the fuel tank should be filled soon.

Here are four things some owners ask about. None of these indicate a problem with the fuel gauge:

  • At the service station, the fuel pump shuts off before the gauge reads full.
  • Slightly more or less fuel may be needed to fill the tank than the gauge indicates. For example, the gauge showed the tank was half full, but filling it actually took a little more or less than half the tank capacity.
  • The needle moves slightly when turning a corner or accelerating.
  • The gauge takes several seconds to stabilize after the ignition is turned on, and returns to empty when the ignition is turned off.
