Shifting out of Park

This vehicle has an electronic transmission. If the vehicle has a discharged or low-voltage battery, try charging or jump starting the battery. See Jump Starting — North America.

To shift out of P (Park):

   Make sure the engine is running.

   Press the brake pedal.

   Press or pull the desired shift lever on the center console.
4. 4
   The P indicator will turn white and the gear indicator will turn red when the vehicle is no longer in P (Park).

If the vehicle cannot shift out of P (Park), the Driver Information Center (DIC) message will be displayed. See your dealer for service.

Diesel Engine Only

Vehicles with a diesel engine do not have a manual park release. Shift into N (Neutral) with the engine off.

   Turn the ignition off.

   Turn the ignition to service mode. See Ignition Positions.

   Press the brake pedal.

   Press and hold the N (Neutral) button until the N illuminates in red.

   When N (Neutral) is no longer needed, shift into P (Park) and turn the ignition off.

Manual Park Release (Gasoline Engine Only)

Vehicles with a gasoline engine may have a manual park release, which can be used to shift the vehicle into N (Neutral) when the engine is not running.

Pulling the manual park release handle while the vehicle is moving, or turning the ignition on while the manual park release is pulled, will result in a Transmission Service message being displayed.

To shift the vehicle into N (Neutral) using the manual park release:

   Make sure the vehicle is on level ground and set the parking brake. Release the brake pedal.

   Turn off the vehicle.

   Use a flat-blade tool to remove the trim panel on the center console to the right of the accelerator pedal.

   Make sure more than one minute has passed since step 2. Press the brake pedal.

   Pull the manual park release lever 90° until it locks in position.

   With the brake pedal released, turn the ignition to the ACC/ACCESSORY position. Then apply the brake pedal and release the Parking Brake.

   Make sure there are no loose objects in the area that could catch on the parking brake lever.

To return the vehicle to P (Park) using the manual park release:

1. 1
   Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.

   Rotate the manual park release lever 90° back to its original position.

   Apply the parking brake.
4. 4
   Confirm that the vehicle is in P (Park) by turning the ignition on or placing it in ACC/ACCESSORY, then make sure the indicator shows P.

   Install the interior trim panel.
