Stop/Start System

~1min read

If equipped, the Stop/Start system will turn off the engine to help save fuel. It has components designed for an increased number of starts.

Automatic Engine Stop/Start

When braking and the vehicle is at a complete stop, the engine may stop. When stopped, the tachometer shows AUTO STOP. See Tachometer. When the brake pedal is released or the accelerator pedal is pressed, the engine will restart.

To maintain vehicle performance, other conditions may cause the engine to restart automatically before the brake pedal is released.

Automatic stops may not occur and/or an automatic restart may occur because of the following:

  • Climate control settings require the engine to run to heat or cool the vehicle interior.
  • The vehicle battery charge is low.
  • The vehicle battery was recently disconnected.
  • The minimum vehicle speed has not been reached since the last Auto Stop.
  • The accelerator pedal is pressed.
  • The engine or transmission is not at the required operating temperature.
  • The outside temperature is not within the required operating range.
  • The vehicle is in any gear other than D (Drive).
  • Towing/Hauling mode or another driver-selected mode is active.
  • The vehicle is on a steep hill or grade.
  • The driver door is open or the driver seat belt is unbuckled.
  • The hood is open.
  • The Auto Stop has reached the maximum allowable time.
