Ignition Positions

The vehicle has an electronic keyless ignition with a START button.
The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter must be inside the vehicle for the system to operate. If the start button does not work, the vehicle may be near a powerful radio transmitter signal, causing interference with the keyless access system. See Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System Operation.
To shift out of P (Park) on vehicles with a gasoline engine, the ignition must be on and the brake pedal must be applied. On vehicles with a diesel engine, the engine does not need to be on to shift out of P (Park). See Leaving Park.
Engine Stop/Off (No Indicator Light): When the vehicle is stopped, press the ENGINE START/STOP button once to turn the engine off.
If the vehicle is in P (Park), the ignition turns off and Retained Accessory Power (RAP) remains active. See Retained Accessory Power (RAP).
If the vehicle is in R (Reverse), D (Drive), or L (Low), the vehicle will shift into P (Park), the ignition turns off, and Retained Accessory Power (RAP) remains active. See Retained Accessory Power (RAP).
If the vehicle is in N (Neutral), the ignition will return to ACC/ACCESSORY and display the message SHIFT TO PARK in the Driver Information Center (DIC). When the vehicle is shifted into P (Park), the ignition system will turn off.
The vehicle may have an electric steering column lock. The lock is activated when the ignition is off and any front door is open. A sound may be heard as the lock engages or releases. The steering column lock may not release if the wheels are turned from center. If this happens, the vehicle may not start. Turn the steering wheel slightly left or right while attempting to start the vehicle. If this does not work, the vehicle needs service.
Do not turn off the engine while the vehicle is moving. This will cause loss of power assist for the brake and steering systems and disable the airbags.
If the vehicle must be turned off in an emergency:
- Brake using firm and steady pressure. Do not pump the brakes repeatedly. This may help deplete the brake assist, requiring increased force on the brake pedal.
- Shift the vehicle into N (Neutral). This can be done while the vehicle is moving. After shifting into N (Neutral), firmly apply the brakes and steer the vehicle to a safe location.
- Come to a complete stop and shift into P (Park).
Apply the parking brake. See Electric Parking Brake. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button to turn the vehicle off.
If the vehicle cannot be stopped and must be turned off while moving, press and hold ENGINE START/STOP for more than two seconds, or press it twice within five seconds.
Accessory/Battery (Amber Indicator): This mode allows you to use some electrical accessories with the engine off.
With the ignition off, press the button once without pressing the brake pedal. The ignition system will switch to ACC/ACCESSORY.
The ignition will switch from ACC/ACCESSORY to OFF after five minutes to prevent battery drain.
ON/RUN/START (Green Indicator Light): This mode is used for starting and driving. With the ignition off and the brake pedal pressed, press the button once to switch the ignition to ON. Release the button once the engine starts. Engine cranking will continue until the engine starts. See Engine Starting. After that, the ignition will remain on.
Service Mode
This power mode is available for service and diagnostics, and to verify that the malfunction indicator operates correctly, as may be required for emissions inspection. With the vehicle off and the brake pedal not pressed, press and hold ENGINE START/STOP for more than five seconds to place the vehicle in Service Mode. Instruments and audio systems will operate as they do in ON/RUN, but the vehicle cannot be driven. The engine does not start in Service Mode. Press ENGINE START/STOP again to turn the vehicle off.
