Airbag Disposal

Special Service Tools Required

Deployment Tool 0957A-34100A Before disposing of any airbags or side airbags (including when the entire vehicle is scrapped), the airbags or side airbags must be deployed. If the vehicle is still under warranty, the technical supervisor must approve and/or give special instructions before deploying the airbags or side airbags. Only after the airbags or side airbags have been deployed (for example, as a result of a vehicle collision) can they be disposed of. If the airbags or side airbags are found undamaged (not deployed), handle them with special care. Follow this procedure. Deploying the airbags in the vehicle: If a vehicle equipped with SRS is to be completely scrapped, its airbags or side airbags must be deployed while in the vehicle. Airbags or side airbags should not be regarded as parts for disposal and must never be installed in another vehicle.
  1. Turn the ignition OFF, disconnect the negative battery cable, and wait at least 3 minutes.
  2. Make sure each airbag or side airbag is securely mounted.
  3. Make sure the special tool operates correctly by performing the check procedure.
    1. Driver airbag:
      A. Remove the driver airbag and install the SST (0957A-3Q100).
      B. Install the driver airbag onto the steering wheel.
    2. Front passenger airbag:
      A. Remove the glove box housing, then disconnect the connector between the front passenger airbag and the main SRS harness.
      B. Install the SST (0957A-3Q100).
    3. Rear side airbag:
      A. Disconnect the 2P connector between the side airbag and the wiring harness.
      B. Install the SST (0957A-3F100).
    4. Curtain airbag:
      A. Disconnect the 2-pin connector between the curtain airbag and the wiring harness.
      B. Install the SST (0957A-3Q100).
    5. Knee airbag:
      A. Disconnect the 2P connector between the knee airbag and the wiring harness.
      B. Install the SST (0957A-3F100).
    6. Seat belt pretensioner:
      A. Disconnect the 2P connector from the seat belt pretensioner.
      B. Install the SST (0957A-3Q100).
    7. Emergency tensioning device:
      A. Disconnect the 2P connector from the emergency tensioning device.
      B. Install the SST (0957A-3Q100).
    8. Side Airbag
      A. Disconnect the connector between the side airbag and the wiring harness.
      B. Install the SST (0957A-2T200).
  4. Place the deployment tool at least 10 meters (30 ft) away from the airbag.
  5. Connect a 12-volt battery to the tool.
  6. Press the tool's deployment switch. The airbag should deploy (deployment is clearly heard and seen: loud noise and rapid inflation of the bag, followed by slow deflation).
  7. Dispose of the airbag as a complete unit. No parts may be reused. Place it in a strong plastic bag and seal it securely.
  8. Make sure the special service tool operates correctly by performing the check procedure on this page.
  9. Place the airbag face up outdoors on a flat surface at least 10 meters (30 ft) away from any obstacles or people.
  10. If installed in the vehicle, perform the removal procedure for the driver airbag, front passenger airbag and side airbag.
  11. In all cases, short the two wires of the airbag inflator together by twisting them.
  12. Package the airbag in the same packaging in which the new replacement part was supplied.
Deploying the airbag outside the vehicle: If an undamaged airbag has been removed from a scrapped vehicle, or defects or damage were found during transport, storage or service, it must be deployed as follows: Disposal of a damaged airbag
