What to do in an emergency

If the engine overheats

~2min read

If the temperature gauge shows overheating, there is a loss of power, or you hear loud knocking or pinging from the engine, the engine is probably too hot. In this case:

1. Leave the road and stop as soon as possible.

2. Place the gear selector in P (automatic transmission) or neutral (manual transmission) and apply the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on, turn it off.

3. If coolant is dripping under the vehicle or steam is coming from under the hood, stop the engine. Do not open the hood until the dripping has stopped or the steam has ceased.

If there is no visible loss of coolant or steam, leave the engine running and make sure the cooling fan is operating.

If the fan is not operating, turn off the engine.

4. Check whether the water pump drive belt is in place.

If it is in place, check that it is properly tensioned. If the drive belt appears to be in good condition, check for coolant leaks from the radiator, hoses or underside of the vehicle. (If the air conditioning was used, it is normal for cold water to drip from the air conditioner when stopped.)

WARNING When the engine is running, keep hair, hands and clothing away from moving parts such as the fan and drive belts to avoid injury.

5. If the water pump drive belt is broken or there is a coolant leak, it is recommended that you contact an authorised HYUNDAI dealer.

WARNING Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. The coolant could spray out of the opening and cause serious burns.

6. If the cause of the overheating cannot be found, wait for the engine temperature to return to normal. Then, if coolant has been lost, carefully add coolant until the level reaches the MAX (half-tank) mark.

7. Proceed carefully, watching for further signs of overheating.

If it happens again, it is recommended that you contact an authorised HYUNDAI dealer.

NOTICE A significant loss of coolant indicates a leak in the cooling system, and it is recommended that the system be checked by an authorised HYUNDAI dealer.
