Safety Precautions
A proper seating position plays an important role in the safety of the driver and passengers, as do the seat belts and airbags in the event of a collision.
WARNING
Do not use a seat cushion. It will reduce friction between the seat and the occupant. In the event of a collision or sudden stop, the occupant's hips may slide under the lap belt. The seat belt may not function properly, and serious internal injuries or even death may result.
Airbags
You can take steps to reduce the risk of injury from airbag deployment. Sitting too close to the airbag greatly increases the risk of injury in the event of deployment. Move your seat as far back from the front airbags as possible while still maintaining control of the vehicle.
WARNING
To reduce the risk of serious injury or death from airbag impact, observe the following precautions:
- Adjust the driver's seat as far back as possible while still allowing you to maintain full control of the vehicle.
- Move the front passenger seat as far back as possible.
- Hold the steering wheel at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions to minimize the risk of arm and hand injuries.
- NEVER place anything or anyone between yourself and the airbag.
- Do not allow the front passenger to place their feet on the instrument panel to minimize the risk of leg injury.
Seat Belts
Always fasten your seat belt before starting a trip.
Passengers must always sit upright and be properly restrained. Infants and small children must be secured in child restraint systems. Use an appropriate child restraint. Children who are too large for a child seat or booster seat and adults must use the seat belts.
WARNING
When adjusting the seat belts, observe the following precautions:
- NEVER wear a seat belt for more than one occupant.
- Always drive with your back straight, and position the lap portion of the seat belt low across the hips.
- NEVER allow children or infants to ride on a passenger's lap.
- Do not wear the seat belt across the neck, or with sharp edges against the body, or move the shoulder belt away from the body.
- Do not allow the seat belt to catch on or hang from anything.
