What to Do in an Emergency

Emergency Towing Precautions

~1min read
  • Turn the ignition key to the ACC position so that the steering wheel is not locked.
  • Shift the transmission control lever to N (Neutral).
  • Release the parking brake.
  • Apply the brake pedal with more force than usual, because the braking effectiveness is reduced.
  • Steering requires more effort because the power steering system is disabled.
  • If you are driving down a long slope, the brakes may overheat and their performance may decrease. Stop frequently and allow the brakes to cool.

NOTE: Automatic transaxle

  • If the vehicle is towed with all four wheels on the ground, towing is permitted only from the front. Make sure the transmission is in N (Neutral). Do not tow the vehicle at speeds over 40 km/h and over 25 km (15 miles). Make sure the steering wheel is unlocked by turning the ignition to the ACC position. The driver must remain in the towed vehicle to operate the steering and brakes.
  • Before towing, check the automatic transmission fluid level. If it is below the "HOT" mark on the dipstick, add fluid. If you cannot add fluid, a wheel dolly must be used.
